Community Forest Ownership – Congo Basin ← Go Back to Project Page
The second lungs of the world (after the Amazon), this area of the Congo basin is 75% tropical rainforest. This priceless area is under threat from destructive logging. This project enables the local community to identify and map customary forest land in 150,000 hectares of forest with a view to obtaining formal commercial rights to the area. These rights will help to protect the forests and the local people’s livelihoods, creating a sustainable future for all.
Two communities in Oshwe, called Nkaw and Ikala are now supported and will be mapping the forest and their traditional terretories. In Nkaw both subsistence farmers (Bantu people) and people who would traditionally be hunter gatherers (Batwa people, sometimes called Pygmies) live side by side, using the forest in different ways. The mapping has really helped them understand one another’s perspectives. There is no Batwa community in Ikala, but the process of mapping has helped resolve a long running conflict between two neighbouring clans. The whole process of a community producing its own map of its rights and uses in relation to a forest has been an incredibly useful tool for helping communities think through how they manage their forests and resolve other problems.
